Triggering alphanumeric keys with a midi controller.
I’ve been looking for something which I could use to map midi events to qwerty/alphanumeric keystrokes for ages. I must have mis-googled quite badly, or perhaps it’s just a really strange thing to do, but either way I’ve found it.
Bome Midi Translator: It is possible to simulate keystrokes in response to incoming MIDI messages. This allows unlimited control over any Windows program by using a MIDI device, like control surfaces.
I initially started looking for this kind of thing when I picked up my BCR2000. All of those knobs and buttons were just crying out to be assigned to opacity, brush size, magnification, feather, play, stop, transform, rotate in Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects and Premiere.
I finally stumbled on Bome through Ableton’s page on Kid Beyond. Check it.
Now I just need a simple way to put together midi controller assignment overlays which don’t require me to stuff around with masking tape whenever I want to change programs.
Tomorrow: Controlling 2x laptops with 2x midi controllers (and not crashing the whole setup with midi feedback).
