Virgin Mobile Australia 3G on Laptop via Bluetooth

I just recently signed up with Virgin because their mobile data rate is extremely competitive - $10/month for 1GB data. I had no luck connecting my laptop via Bluetooth so I eventually called up Virgin support to ask for the required settings. The friendly support lady told me that it’s “not possible” to use the phone as a modem. This page seems to hold a solution, update when I have it working.
Update: It works! Took me a while, and I had some help from the guy who made the original post on whirlpool.net.au, the magic setting was not having anything in the username and password box.
