Paranoid Android, played on Ukulele, while sitting on the toilet
Just in case anyone missed Ben Stewart’s gig at Ric’s on the weekend. He uploaded a video of himself playing Paranoid Android, on Ukulele, on The Toilet.
The Awesomeness is strong with this one. Lovely fast intimate production. The shower scene is particularly excellent.
Ben Stewart – Violet the Killjoy Music Video
This is one of those videos which should be watched first, then explained:
Ben Stewart – Violet the Killjoy (Outside In) from Jaymis on Vimeo.
This was one of the most fun videos I’ve ever been involved in. Well and truly nestled in the “fast, cheap, effective” philosophy, we went from concept to completed shoot in under 24 hours.
Ben Stewart approached me with a small budget and a catchy song. On Saturday night, while waiting for Rachgirl to get off the phone with her mum, I did a little experiment with party poppers and the 200FPS slow motion mode on my camera.
I called Rowley Cowper up on Sunday morning with “bring your tools over, you need to make me a device to set off 200 party poppers at once”. Ben and I bought Cannon Hill out of poppers, Billy Hyde’s out of ukuleles, and we made it to The Edge in time for nightfall.
As it took almost two hours to load the launcher, and as we were shooting in The Edge auditorium after closing, we only had one chance to get the shot, so we did about a dozen rehearsals before the “live fire” exercise. Read the rest of this entry »
Jaymis with Marcus Westbury on ABC Arts video blog
The prolifically cool Marcus Westbury came along to The Edge launch last month, and got his fast punchy video blog on for ABC Arts. I was running the webcast for the night, so he came and had a chat to me about what I was doing, and what I think is important with video production:
Tuning SBS using MythTV and a DVICO Capture Card on Ubuntu in Brisbane
I’ve been fiddling around with Ubuntu + MythTV for a while on the Small Form Factor machine I’d previously been carting around the country for gigs. After a reasonably excessive number of reinstalls, I finally got both MythTV and Boxee working, with the caveat that I couldn’t tune SBS, Australia’s second-best TV channel behind ABC.
It turns out that MythTV’s channels.conf file doesn’t quite work for some people. After Googling around multiple times in the intervening months since installation, I finally discovered the solution for various people has been to slightly change the frequency that MythTV searches. For Brisbane it changes to 585791667.
To edit this, open MythTV Backend Setup. Go to Channel Editor > Transport Editor
My MythTV setup shipped with 5 transports.

585500000 is for SBS in the UHF frequency band. Unfortunately, this wouldn’t tune for me. So it needs to be updated to 585791667.

After saving this and re-scanning, I got SBS1, 2, 3, 4 and HD showing up in my Channel List! Superb.
Spleen Minus 10 Hours, Rockstar Second Thoughts
In the month since the coming of the spleening, it seems to have gone slightly viral. In the good, web way! Featured on Make:Blog, and insanely popular blog of political writer Andrew Sullivan. The main video has currently been viewed over 12,000 times. Yikes.
It’s also been picked up by a nice Spanish guy, an awesome French visualist type, and a bunch of other places around the world… I was thinking about taking my skeleton/spleen on tour, but then my surgeon emailed me back yesterday to tell me that she would allow me to get some of the laparoscope footage of my surgery. So I think I’m going to go through with it.
10 hours to go.
New Video Release: Edward Guglielmino – Fail With Me
I’ve just released Fail With Me, the latest of many works I’ll be producing for Edward Guglielmino‘s album Late At Night.
This joins several other videos I’ve produced recently for Ed:
Lion In Your Bed (Live)
Fail With Me (Live)
No Body Is Perfect (Live)
Caught In A Landslide (Live, Bridge Sessions)
Late At Night (Live, Bridge Sessions)
I’ve also posted on Create Digital Motion about the philosophy and techniques behind the production of this video.
Now I’m off to have lunch with Ed and plan for our next escapade.
