Emma Louise at the Old Museum – Shut The Door and West End Kids: Live Music Videos

In the lead up to the release of Emma Louise’ new album Supercry, Mushroom Records asked if I’d spend a day with Emma and record some intimate, solo live tracks in one of her favourite creative spaces, Brisbane’s Old Museum.

Tim Shiel and Queensland Symphony Orchestra – Duet Live: Performance

Tim Shiel composed the award-winning soundtrack to mobile application Duet, a mesmerising, minimalist, and wonderfully difficult game.

Brisbane orchestral composer Ryan Walsh found himself thoroughly addicted to Duet and decided that he’d make things much worse by arranging the soundtrack for a 16 piece orchestra.

Tim asked if I’d be interested in putting together live visuals for the show. We met up in Melbourne, planned out the storyline of the set and how we’d translate the 2D, minimalist visuals of the game into something immersive.

Then I spent a couple of weeks building 3D versions of the game, and making those simple rotating Red/Blue balls into an epic journey through space, building weird mechanical cityscapes and crashing suns into planets.

For the show I did live visuals and also programmed lights via Ableton Live, creating a rather special, immersive 45 minute experience. It was performed for a rapt audience on 15th May, 2015. Here’s a 15-minute section from the middle of the show, with my visuals overlaid in some sections to get a proper feel for the animation style:

Ball Park Music – Groovin The Moo Tour 2015: Live Show Visuals

I got together with Ball Park Music’s Sam Cromack to put together live visuals for their 2015 run of Groovin The Moo shows. Ranging from infinitely scrolling backdrops taken from album cover collages, to disembodied 3D scans of the band members’ heads shooting eye lasers.

Oh, and dancing models of the band with the then Australian Prime Minister, in speedos, up a pole. You’re welcome.

Paranoid Android, played on Ukulele, while sitting on the toilet

Just in case anyone missed Ben Stewart’s gig at Ric’s on the weekend. He uploaded a video of himself playing Paranoid Android, on Ukulele, on The Toilet.

The Awesomeness is strong with this one. Lovely fast intimate production. The shower scene is particularly excellent.

Surface Paradise – Look at Miss Ohio and The Gulf Stream – Live at Letterbox Lullabies

Letterbox Lullabies is a series of intimate house gigs put on by stalwarts of The Troubadour, Brisbane’s most beloved music venue. This was my second Letterbox Lullabies shoot: Surface Paradise, featuring Matt Redlich, Rowley Cowper and Timothy Carroll.

For these shows I aim to be as unobtrusive as possible, so these videos were shot on a single handheld Digital SLR, with audio recorded by Anto Pink and mixed by Matt Redlich.

The performance of Look At Miss Ohio was one of my favourite live music moments from 2010.

For The Gulf Stream, I wanted to experiment with stabilization (and a little motion tracking of guitar) on the DSLR footage. I was able to get the hand-held footage pretty smooth, but the rolling shutter of my Pentax K7 makes it a bit hard for video geeks to watch.

The entire set is available for download from http://surfaceparadise.bandcamp.com/

Cowper – The Kite Song and Capulet – Live at The Edge

Cowper played at The Edge‘s first Show Pony showcase event. As a Catalyst at The Edge, I was responsible for tech setup and mixing live video, as well as VJing other artists on the night, alongside my weapon of choice: Cowper.

With a couple of capable camera assistants, I was able to put together edits of two songs from the Cowper set:

Audio from this set is available for (free) download.
